This exercise helped me get on QVC. Why, maybe, you shouldn’t hate it

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming September 2010

jane pushups knees

Yes, it’s the dreaded push-up.  But wait, before you say you “hate it”, think about this. That which does not kills you makes you _________.  Yes, stronger, and that’s the point of a push-up.  It will make you physically and mentally stronger so you can get the things you have to fight for in life.

Don’t worry if you can’t even do one now.  I have clients who started with 1 push-up against the wall, progressed to 10 knee push-ups (Jane is doing it above from my 5 Minutes to Fitness+ DVD) and finally, 10 regular push-ups, and they are stronger and fitter than they’ve ever been.

How did a push-up help get me on QVC?  I took one of the toughest exercises in my 5 Minutes to Fitness+ core exercise program DVD and for 2 years, every time I did my push-ups I thought about how nothing would stop me from getting my DVD on QVC.  The strangest thing happened.  It worked :-)

How you can exercise/train anywhere, almost

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming September 2010

Peter K travel workout1

Sorry for the poor quality picture but I shot this in a tiny hotel gym, reflected by a mirror when it was about 90 degrees while on a recent trip.  Anyway, the point is we can train our bodies (doesn’t that sound more exciting and athletic than “exercise”?) almost anywhere.  Here’s how to set yourself up for success:

  • Make the plan- pack your Peter K bands, running sneakers or tennis racket wherever you go
  • Write down when, where and how long you will train
  • Decide why you’ll train. Exercising for the sake of exercising doesn’t motivate most of us
  • Challenge yourself to overcome adversity. I trained early morning in this tiny gym by attaching my bands to a flimsy door that I just about blew off it’s hinges

Remember you are training your body for something great, not just to lose weight. That’s just an added bonus. Have fun and smile.

Try this stretch for shin and calf pain

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming soon!

shin_stretch

Recently a client came to see me for shin splints (shin pain) right before a triathlon. Here’s why they might occur:

  • Too much exercise (activity) too soon
  • Not stretching daily
  • Tight achilles tendon (calf)
  • Worn sneakers or improper footwear (think flip flops)

What to do:

  • Do the stretch above daily and especially before and after exercise
  • Stretch your calves
  • Hold all stretches for 30 sec (if your knees are pain free)
  • Cut back on the exercise that’s causing the pain for 1 week
  • If you’re running try biking or swimming intermittently
  • If it doesn’t get better see a physical therapist and of course you can email me with your physical therapy question

Try this twist on squats for great legs and a tight bottom

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming soon

This exercise is one of the best for great legs and a tighter butt. You don’t need weights, special equipment or much space.

Jane squat 1

Start: Do a basic squat like you’re sitting in a chair.

Jane squat 2

Finish: Upon rising raise your leg out to the side. Alternate sides and do a total of 20 or until you feel the burn. Repeat as part of your 5 Minutes to Fitness+ routine.  You can do this exercise everyday like Jane and me. I took this pic during one of our training sessions in a local park. Oh yea, remember to smile and think about what you love most when training. (Jane was smiling until I took the second pic and she asked- “You want me to do what?” :-)

If you ever get to see Jane during my live events you’ll notice she has beautifully toned legs and never uses weights or machines. Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need to be consistent. If this hurts your knees email me for a modification.

John’s favorite exercise move and what “diet” means to him

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming soon

John bryant park

Here’s John during a coaching session in Bryant Park, NYC. He tell me this is his favorite “5 Minutes to Fitness+” move. Not because it’s the easiest :-) , but because he feels most powerful. Now that’s positive thinking. Align how you move your body, with what you want most, and you will be more powerful in mind and body, like John. When John pulls on that band, he’s not just pulling on that band; he’s connecting what he wants most in his mind to his body movement, confirming it, strengthening it. That’s the power of exercise that few people know and use. Now you know.

He was also inspired to write about what the word diet means to him.  I think you’ll like how he candidly explores his challenges…

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming soon

Peter K tampa abs shoot

Hi from hot, sticky florida.  I shot 2 new segments for the 5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming this summer. One was on the beach, all about the best thing to drink in the heat. The answer, drum roll……….. WATER.  Stay away from the power drinks, flavored water, caffeinated concoctions and blue # 1. Water and and piece of fruit are  best for you to stay hydrated and keep your energy up.

The second segment was shot at a beautiful lagoon. (Picture above. BTW, that’s my producer Jem. No not in the orange shirt, the other guy holding the boom mic.  You know, the one who forced me to have a beer or 2 with him last night.) I will show you how to get a flat stomach and abs without doing crunches!

You are going to love these weekly videos. Coming soon, I promise.

5 Minutes to Fitness+ Club coming soon

Peter K with Ali and Steph 1st tri

Alison and Stephanie planned something special and they got into incredible shape.  They just did there 1st triathlon and I am so proud and impressed by them!

Ali and Steph didn’t just walk up to the edge of the water early one morning and start swimming in their first triathlon. That would have been terrifying, foolish and sabotaging. They:

  • Committed to an event
  • Told others about their goals
  • Set up a training plan and followed it
  • Got a mentor to assist them

You have something great waiting for you. You just have to plan it and surround yourself with great people.  Then great things will happen for you!

One secret to their success is……
