Alison- When I was in graduate school for Public Health, I had an assignment where I had to take a public health problem and fix it. I created a smoking cessation campaign that I called “Try, Try Again”, more »

Alison nyc_half_2011_1

Alison- I think I completed 4 half marathons before I finally started calling myself a “runner”, and it was somewhere after my third triathlon before I referred to myself as an “athlete” (and I still think I should be called “athlete*”, with an asterisk. I think I have what most athletes need: fitness, determination and discipline; there’s only one small thing I’m lacking that gives me the asterisk in my mind – skill). But this morning after having to stop a 5 mile run after completing fewer than 3 miles of it, I decided to identify myself with a new term: “injured”. more »

Alison- I’ll be honest.  I woke up this morning feeling completely sick.  It wasn’t because I’d eaten an entire pepperoni and mushroom pizza (though I wish it was, sigh), or because I’d gotten up at 4 AM on a Sunday (though I had, another sigh).  It was because I had a race today. more »

Alison:  I did NOT want to swim today.  What can I say: for Spring it’s miserably cold, swimming is my weakest sport, and even though I’ve gotten used to waking up at 4AM to workout every morning, do you ever really get used to that? more »

Alison’s Blog- Visions, 4 half marathons & finding purpose

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution and learn the strategies that helped Alison complete 4 half marathons

Alison nyc_half_2011_1

Peter K talks a lot about visions. His basic gist is that it’s important to pick some kind of feat we want to accomplish, and then set out the path necessary to get from where we are to where we want to be.

Last year I had a vision to complete a half marathon. And I did it – 4 times. more »

Alison- “Jackie, Stephanie, Jackie, Stephanie.”

When I run, I often resort to repeating mantras to myself. It keeps me focused, helps pass some time, and frankly stops all the negative thoughts in my head from popping up and taking over. I have a few different mantras. One is “Finish strong”, which I love to repeat for the last ½ mile or so of my races. Another is “70 gone”, which I repeat when I feel like my alter ego, “Fat Girl”, is hitching a ride on my back during my long runs. That one reminds me of the weight I’ve lost and how I’m able to actually do these runs (and is sort of my polite way of telling “Fat Girl” to get lost). My favorite mantra is simple and requires no explanation: “I got this.” more »

Alison:

I’m going to start this blog by reminding you that I’m a data analyst. Not only does this mean that I’m ridiculously intelligent ☺, but that I’m also extremely organized. My spices are alphabetized in the pantry, the sweaters in my closet are sorted by color, and when I unpack my bag at the gym, I put everything in my locker in the opposite order in which I will need it, so that I don’t have to dig through my stuff to find anything. My husband jokes that he’s waiting for the day that I turn to the kids and say, “OK! The spontaneous fun will begin in 10 minutes!” more »

Alison:

My 2 ½ year old son, Benjamin, loves knock-knock jokes. Most evenings at the dinner table, the following conversation can be heard in my home:

Ben: “Knock, knock.”

Someone Else: “Who’s there?”

Ben: “Umm, a gorilla.”

Someone Else: “A gorilla who?”

Ben: “A gorilla sitting on the counter.” Then we all crack up into hysterical laughter (don’t worry, none of us get it either).

Alison: I want to start this blog by saying that it’s all Peter K’s fault.

Now, before you block his website permanently from your computer, let me explain. About a year and a half ago, I was working out during a health coaching session with Peter, when he asked me seven simple words that changed my life: “Hey, Al, have you ever tried running?” I replied to that sentence with words that I can’t repeat in this G-rated blog, more »
