Alison-  When I was fat, I hated going to the gym. I always said I was too tired to go, or I had too many other things to do. The truth of the matter, though, was that I was completely intimidated. more »

muscleMan

Every week someone says to me, “I want to workout but I don’t want big muscles”.  Trust me, it’s takes a lot to get big, ungainly muscle mass. Guys try for years to get it and can’t. So don’t worry, your few minutes a day of working out to build muscle won’t make you look like the guy above. Daily smart training with your resistance bands and body weight will give you sexy, tone muscle and help you burn fat and be healthy.  Now go train :-)

What did you have for breakfast?

bagels

Hopefully you didn’t have anything in the case above.

Walking in NYC this morning I witnessed a phenomenon that takes place everyday, even where you live. People start their day with the wrong breakfast. Ask yourself these questions to see if you ate the best breakfast for you:

  • Why did you choose it?
  • How did you feel after eating?
  • What was the quality of the food?
  • Did it have excessive sugar, fat, salt and preservatives/chemicals?
  • Could you have made a better decision? If yes, what?
  • Why didn’t you make a better decision?

Everyone I ask wants 3 things: to lose weight, have more energy and less pain. Breakfast is a chance to get all 3! Tomorrow make a great choice. Just do it.

How to get rid of saddlebags. Yes, saddlebags

fat thighs

I recently shot a video in Central Park for “5 Minutes to Fitness+” TV about how to get rid of saddlebags.  I did the segment because someone complained to me about her saddlebags this week. She asked what exercise was best to get rid of them. I let her speak for about 3 minutes, guiding her thought process, until she finally realized her saddlebags were not the result of too little exercise. They’re the result of poor food choices. Example: That day she reported stopping for a soda and chocolate bar at a convenience store and eating sweets while babysitting her grandchildren. Ok once in awhile but not daily.

I asked her:

“Do you really want to get rid of your saddlebags?”

She exploded, “YES”.

I replied, “Keep a food log”.

She became deflated and said, “Oh, I can’t do that, it’s too hard”.

I then asked, “What’s harder, keeping a food log, or your saddlebags?”

She mumbled something defeatest and walked away. The point, take control of your eating by keeping a food log. It’s one of the best ways to lose weight, and the saddlebags :-)

Peter K and Ali Scotland run 2010

Here’s a picture of Alison and Peter K from the recent Scotland Run 10k in NYC.

“Give it up, Fat Girl.  You’ll never make it.  Just go home.”

No, this isn’t a blog about my high school basketball tryouts.  I heard this on my run yesterday morning.  And no, there weren’t a bunch of bullies in front of me tormenting another kid.  That conversation went on inside my own head. more »
