Orange County, CA Edition- Steak, calories and chocoholics

Monday, January 30th, 2012

the_real_housewives_of_orange_county-13341

Nope, didn’t run into any of them. Shucks.

I did have a woman confess in front of the audience she was a “chocoholic” , heard more incredible stories, and ate an 18 oz Cowboy steak at a 90 year old LA steakhouse while staying near my calories. more »

Susan’s Blog: Down 76.5lbs and counting. What is motivating her?

Susan derose - June

I want you to know I report Susan’s weight to you every week because it’s exciting to see her progress, but I also hope it will get you to read her blog posts.  The reason I want you to read her posts, and Alison’s and Chrissy’s, is because they are sharing real stories and incredible insights that can and will assist you in your health journey. They’re also damn good writers.

In my last session with Susan, we both had tears in our eyes in the middle of a Starbucks. At one point she leaned in and said, “You better not make me cry in Starbucks”. I said, “too late, I’m already there”.  Why did we get so emotional?  I asked Susan, she might say pushed :-) , to tell me how she was doing so well and what was motivating her.  She also showed up with a complete analysis of her food and fitness and questions for me. I was floored.  As her coach, I was never more proud.  She is doing the things that successful people do, and unsuccessful people refuse to do.   I’ll let her tell you about it below. We also spent time after the session talking as close friends, which I value greatly.  Thank you Susan for being my friend and sharing your courageous journey with us!

One more thing. She gave me a semi-convincing argument for not doing the bands at home due to lack of space. I wouldn’t let her off the hook that easy :-) Maybe she’ll tell you about it sometime. more »

“Is it ok to eat cookies when trying to be healthy?”

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution, have your health and eat your cookie too :-)

During a corporate wellness webinar I gave on Wall St. yesterday, a woman asked me if cookies could be part of a healthy lifestyle.  My answer….. wait for it……. YES.  Just not the one pictured above :-)

Of course you can have a cookie or two and still live a healthy lifestyle.  Here’s what I recommend and what I teach my 3 kids about the cookie enigma.  Please feel free to leave a comment below with your favorite healthy cookie secrets.

  • Choose cookies with only 5 or 6 ingredients that you can recognize- No high fructose syrup, chemicals or dyes
  • Try to buy fruit juice sweetened or pure sources of sugar like cane sugar, stevia and agave
  • Buy organic when you can
  • Always eat the recommended serving size or less (good luck with this one :-)
  • One of my clients makes her own whole wheat chocolate chip cookies with her kids- Awesome!
  • Never call cookies treats or use them as rewards

So go ahead, have your cookie and your health too.  Remember you are in control, you have power.

If you eat beef, chicken, or pork read this, then buy organic

grass-fed-beef

I’ve been telling people to buy organic, or at least antibiotic free for years, not because it tastes better, but because it won’t make you sick.   The nations first study of beef, chicken, and pork for the presence of staph bacteria (MRSA) revealed that nearly half the nations supply is contaminated.  The animals are resistant to antibiotics because they are plied with them to counter unsanitary conditions and boost meat production.

Here are some basic guidelines:

  • Buy organic- I know it’s expensive but if you can swing it, it’s well worth it
  • Buy antibiotic and hormone free meat at least if not organic
  • Look for grass fed beef- better cholesterol and fat profile
  • Choose free range poultry
  • Most supermarkets carry some of these products

Beef, chicken, and pork can be healthy if eaten in moderation and by following the guidelines above.

Recipe- Revolutionary Breakfast: White Eggs and Blue Berries

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution and start your own food revolution >

eggs and berries

Break away from tradition and start your very own food revolution.  All you need is a little red in this picture to represent America’s proud colors, perhaps a raspberry or two would do.  This super simple breakfast idea will give you energy and the protein to build muscle as well as great health.  Wash it down with good old water and save the 120 calories from orange juice.

Make sure all ingredients are organic- conventional egg yolks have a negative effect on cholesterol and conventional berries have the highest pesticide residue.

Calories- 130 with 1 egg and small handful of berries.

When you eat this think about who and what you love most and how you are revolutionizing your health by eating for purpose not pleasure.

Bonus Tip- To make perfectly hard boiled eggs: Cover eggs with water, bring to a boil then turn off heat. Let sit covered for 10 minutes, drain and run under cold water = perfection.
