Stress- You’re not that important

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution and learn stress techniques >

smiling_woman2

A therapist once taught me how to diffuse my stress immediately.  She looked me in the eye, smiled, and said, “Peter, you’re just not that important.”  What that means is don’t take your self too seriously. When you have negative thoughts, think about mistakes you’ve made or start beating yourself up, smile and let it go. In the scheme of things will it matter in a year, next week or tomorrow?

You also know when you smile you can’t feel crummy. Try it all day today. When you’re feeling stressed, remind yourself that although you are special in many ways, you’re just a one of the grains of sand on this vast beach.  Have some fun today.

Stress, resentment and overeating

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution. You won’t resent it and overeat :-)

Busy-Mom-and-Housewife

I spoke with a FFR member who works full-time, her husband works full-time, they have 4 kids, she runs her household, carpools, prepares all the meals, gets up at 4:30 am to exercise- (are you stressed for her yet?) and eats chocolate in her car because she resents everything she “has” to do for everyone else.  She justifies that she “deserves” the chocolate and thinks, “I’ll show them, I’ll eat this chocolate and no one can stop me.”

Eventually she feels guilty for overeating and for having thoughts of resentment towards her family and eats more to try and feel better.  She sees the cycle but most days can’t break it.

As her coach, what would you tell her to help break this pattern?  What would you do if this was you?  Add your comment below or email me here > and I’ll post it so we can all help her.

I’ll share the strategy I gave her and other FFR members with similar challenges on next week’s Health Coaching show: Wednesday, May 25th at 1:30 pm. Stay tuned for details.

Remember to leave your helpful strategy and comment below so we can all help her “step away from the chocolate”.

Stress reducer- Disengagement and refocusing: Try this….

Join the Fit Friends’ Revolution and get your FREE Resistance Bands, workout DVD and Nutrition Book >

stress- Nature Trails

Have you ever felt overwhelmed, helpless, even a slight tightness in your chest?  I know, dumb question right? Well what can we do about it?  I have a technique I use very often with my clients and myself- insight: I get these feelings too.

Try these powerful stress strategies to disengage from your current thought process. (Hint- your current thought process is what keeps you stuck feeling this way)

  • Disengage from what you’re doing completely. Do this when you don’t know what to do to feel better. Examples- get up from your desk and walk outside, or go somewhere you’ve never been before or talk to a total stranger- anything to engage your mind in a unique behavior or activity that it must focus on instead of how lousy you feel.
  • Smile as big as you can and think about a favorite place you’d love to be right now.
  • Take 3 deep breaths and relax your shoulders while sitting or standing as tall as you can.
  • Now that you broke your negative thought cycle, come up with one simple action step to directly affect why you’re feeling stressed.
  • Take that step right now. Don’t wait. When you take a step toward addressing your stress you will empower yourself.

What to do the next time you find yourself on your knees

Abraham Lincoln down on knees quote

I saw this needlepoint in a store recently and it made me smile.  You mean you and I aren’t the only ones that get frustrated, stressed, overwhelmed and sometimes, driven to our knees :-)  It makes me feel better to know someone like Abraham Lincoln found life challenging at times while still accomplishing great things.  Thanks Abe!

Stress reliever- Does this really matter anyway?

Fit Friends’ Revolution coming soon!

Peter K blue laptop

That’s the question I ask myself every time I’m super stressed.  ”Does it really matter anyway”, or “Will this matter when I look back at the end of my life.  Whether it’s money, mean people, frustration, supposed failure or whatever, what will matter most to me?

Make a list of what you value most and think about it when the ____ hits the fan :-0  Here are some examples we can use:

  • Have we loved the children in our lives
  • Did we have fun?
  • Who’s life have we made better?
  • What is our legacy?
  • Did we accomplish the dreams we had as children?

I hope this helps you as much as it does me! I feel better already :-)

Ever make this strange yet familiar sound when stressed? U____

Alison race

Recently Alison turned her “Ugh” into “Yea!” all before 90% of the world woke up. Here’s Alison:

“Ugh.”

This is the first thing I think when my alarm goes off.  Ugh.  Time to get up, get dressed, do 20 minutes of resistance bands and go for an 8 mile run.  And the only thought in my head is “Ugh.”  I just can’t do this anymore. more »
